Therapy can be a difficult and sometimes painful process and I will do my best to support you through that journey, to provide safe and confidential environment. In the end it can be hugely rewarding process, that can change your life and how you choose to live it.

Counselling and Psychotherapy

What to expect

When we meet for an initial session, I will ask you questions about the various areas of your life, and about why you are coming to see me. We will discuss how our sessions are going to work and how we can move towards what you want.

We will regularly review our work together and discuss our progress.

Counselling and Psychotherapy can be a different experience for every one of us. For some it is about a safe and non-judgemental space, where it's OK to speak about difficult topics and express yourself freely. Others appreciate directness, openness of communications and a challenge to their set ways of being. Often we look at what is happening in the here and now, and use our experience together to look at how you relate with others outside the therapy room.

Most of therapy work is spoken. Sometimes we may focus on what is happening for you in your body, work creatively or move around.

Counselling or Psychotherapy?
There are different approaches to making distinctions between these two in the field. In my work they are two very similar ways of working. In counselling the work tends to be more goal oriented, working on a more specific problem. Counselling tends to be shorter as well. Psychotherapy is looking at the whole person and explores different aspects and different depths over a longer period of time. Sometimes what starts as a more counselling work fluently changes into psychotherapy work over time.

"Counselling and psychotherapy are always undertaken at the request of the client. No-one can properly be ’sent’ for counselling or psychotherapy. There are many situations where people with influence in our lives (perhaps a relative, manager at work, or teacher) who may suggest talking therapies as a solution to a problem. This should be offered without any pressure or strings attached" (BACP).
